Volunteering After Retirement

Many people plan to do some form of volunteering after they retire. It’s such a popular topic. The hardest part is getting started.

Volunteering in retirement has an amazing mutual benefit: The organization receives contributions from someone with a lifetime of experience and wisdom, while retirees get a positive transition from their paid working careers.

Advantages of volunteering are:

  • Intellectual stimulation. (beyond Sudoku puzzles)
  • Connection to social networks.
  • Enhanced health and quality of life.
  • Provides a sense of purpose.

Most frequently cited reasons for not volunteering are

  • They haven’t been asked
  • They aren’t sure where to best use their skills and experience.

One such organisation where you could ask your parents to volunteer to be a change agent in society is:

Teach For India

.

What do they do?

Teach For India is currently impacting over 30,000 children in 268 schools across 7 cities in India through its Fellowship Program. For eg: In New Delhi alone there are currently 30+ staff members and 250+ Fellows work together to serve more than 9600 students across 74 schools in the city.

The organisation has approximately 1200 Fellows and is present in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

One can use this chance to make a real difference in tackling one of India’s most ]pressing challenges — educational inequity.

One can apply for Fellowship programme (to contribute as a teacher) or choose to contribute within the area of his/her expertise as a staff member.

Who can apply?

  • Applicants need to be either of Indian citizenship or of Indian origin.
  • Must have been outstanding professionals in the field of their expertise.
  • There is no age limit.

Fellowship programme

It is a 2 year full-time paid commitment as teachers in under-resourced and low-income schools.

Fellows are placed in 2nd to 10th standard classrooms where they teach all major subjects — including English, Mathematics, Social studies and Science with the exception of regional languages.

Fellows will be full-time staff members of the schools in which they are placed and will work stipulated school hours six days a week as well as attending training and support sessions as per city requirements. A salary of 17500/- is offered.

Five-week residential training program and a Mentor in the form of a Program Manager would  guide Fellows to become effective teachers.

Support staff

One could join Teach For India as support staff within your area of expertise if teaching is too much of a challenge. Support the movement If you are the strategist, analyst, ideator and leader. Posts for city director, HR, advertisement and various other fields are available.

Retired persons are  making up just 2% of volunteers in Mumbai and Delhi, 3% in Chennai and 4% in Kolkata in Teach For India. More participation from these sections could enable them to organize more classes on weekdays. Your elderly parent can be that agent of change – maybe they are just waiting for you to ask.
